What a Great Year!!!
One of my favorite passages in the New Testament is found in Paul’s letter to the church in Philippi. He encouraged them with this famous line: “God, who began a good work in you, will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6).” It appears from his letters in the New Testament that this particular church may have been Paul’s favorite. It was to this small church on the outskirts of the Empire that Paul turned when he needed to raise some money for the church in Jerusalem that was experiencing famine and a severe economic depression. They responded by giving all they could possibly afford to people they had never met. In response Paul promised them that God would fulfill the call on their church and lives.
If you go to Philippi today, you will not find this church. It has been lost to history amid the ruble of many centuries. Yet how many people have been impacted by their witness through Paul’s letter to them? I would say it is millions upon millions of Christians have been encouraged by this little house church that probably struggled to survive and eventually closed. Two thousand years later people refer to it every Sunday around the globe. I would go so far to say that this letter is producing disciples and encouraging believers every day from now until Jesus returns! That is impact!
God has given Christ Community Church the same promise. In 2004 the Lord began a “God-sized” work in the living room of Mike and Penny Glass. They had no way of knowing where that journey would lead and who it would involve. The journey has had its ups and downs, its gains and losses, but one thing it has not crossed is the finish line. God still has much for us to do and experience together.
I look forward to 2015 because I think we have better days ahead of us than behind us. I still can’t believe where we are now compared to where we were when I began last January. We have gone from homeless to a very visible location in Edmond. We are on pace to have new members and new baptisms. We have paid all the bills with enough reserve to cover a couple of months. We are praying hard about our mission opportunities that continue to present themselves.
Could this be going any better? I would say no but I think the Lord is saying “just wait and see what I can do (Numbers 11:23).” Something tells me we are in for a great journey ahead. Who is going to join our membership this year? Who are we going to baptize? Who is going to respond to a call to ministry this year? Who is going to step up to become a deacon, and elder, or a missionary among us? I have no idea – but I can’t wait to see it happen. Please join me in daily prayer for our church and each member by name – let’s press on till the day God has fulfilled his work in us. Amen? Amen!
